Samiya Yuusuf Omar, at 16, Runs For Somalia at Olympics

Although Somalia is a country ridden by more than 17 years of lawlessness and civil war, its people are uniquely encouragable and very inspirational.  The country's institutions and infrastructure are all destroyed and in rubbles.  Almost no sporting facilities exist. All the sports trainers and athletes had dimineshed in number mostly scaping the daily killings. Except one!

The one, Somali athlete, Samiya Yuusf Omar who is just 16-years-old, comes from a poor family with no one to support them.  No one in her family works for a living.  Yet, against all odds, as her story is featured in the BBC's Against the Odds series following athletes heading to the Olympics despite huge obstacles.

So common to the Somali community in the coutry, there aren't legitimate sports facilities for men anywhere in the country let alone women.  So Samiya can usually be seen jogging out on the streets of Mogadishu, risking she might be stopped, and sometimes is stopped or harrased by men telling her she should not continue doing what she does; take part in sports.
